Dealer's Tales | Stagnant Career

Other than the stress that comes form fear of making mistakes, a stagnant career growth adds on to Genting's dealers blues. As a dealer in Genting, if you do not get promoted your salary will be stagnant forever. There is no annual pay increment. Here is the account form an ex-dealer.

Basic
Croupier: RM1315(firm no matter how long you worked)
Supervisor: around RM2000(minimum 2 years experience as croupier with the knowledge of at least 3 main games)
Assistant Manager(AM): around RM5000(5 years experience if not mistaken)
Manager: Not sure.... (Some had been on the job for 20 years could not attain this post)

If you are degree holder in management, you can join Genting's casino operations
For the first month you will be croupier
In the 2nd month you move on to supervisor
by the 3rd month you get to be AM unless your probation is extended.

Gosh, dealers in Genting are over paid. Base on the cost of living in 2007, RM1300 inclusive meal and lodging is equivalent to RM1800. A fresh graduate can draw this salary working as a bank officer. Fancy that, high school leavers are getting paid fresh graduate's salary.

They are dealing with money and constant error is going to be costly. That is the main reason they are highly paid. Look at the sample payout below and you can appreciate the effort they need to put in. It is also important that they give no indication that they are working out the calculation. They have to do it like a robot that some forum members asked if they punch in some figures to get the answer.

Regarding the roulette pay out, it's manually calculated. Candidates for the post will have to undergo training and pass a small test. It is all mental calculation where you are not allowed to whisper it out or use hand.

For example. A customer strike 3 chips on single bet, 4 chips on split bet and 4 chips on square bet. The croupier will usually work it out this this way
3 x (35 + 17 + 8) = 180 chips
1 x (17 + 8) = 25 chips
Total payment = 205 chips
They will use the amount of chips as payment instead of the amount of money as payment.

Guess what? Imagine if a dealer is caught doing the calculation mentioned using fingers to count. It will be close to a mini riot. Punters will be telling them the calculations harshly and scolding them for being slow. This may pressure them. They can end up working out the wrong math.

I could just recall the times when I did joint attack with Unker LDC. If we made a good hit the dealer will be faced with these complicated calculations. I had to use fingers and toes to calculate the winning. Before I am done calculating, they had already dispensed the payout. Damn, they are good! Sometime I see them stacking and re staking the chips. Now I know the reason. They are doing their counting with the chips instead of using fingers.

Dealer's Tales | Sour Faced Dealers

Don’t you get piss when you see a dealer with a sour face? Damn, it’s not like we owe them a living! It won’t hurt for them to smile a little, because as customers we pay their salaries. Let’s hear their justification.

Please don't blame us. Working in a casino is very stressful. Calculation are being done mentally all the time. We need to look out for customer's post betting and avoid making mistakes.

Although we are told by the management to smile to customers, we just can do it because of the stress we are feeling. We are better off concentrating on doing a good job. It would save us form being shot by our supervisor.

Okay, this guy had appealed to my good side. I have some sympathy for them because my mental calculation sucks. Doing mental calculation is not a problem but making sure it is correct is the problem. What would you do when you see a sour faced dealer again? I think I will smile instead. These poor little newbie had not adapted to the job yet and most likely homesick to death. If they don't want to give me some tenderness, it won't hurt for me to give them mine.

But some are so cocky that you feel like slapping them on the face. They act like they had triumph over you. As if they get to keep the money you lost. That will really make your blood boil.

I am afraid I have not seen such dealers but I heard many of my friends complained about them. Now, I know what is on their minds.

I resigned in January, but the last time I went back to visit my friends, they say now they see the scams very seriously, many people got caught lately.

As to the sour face, it's not really that the dealers could help it. Sometimes when I felt happy, I would smile and try to get the numbers in Roulette with the highest bets. Most of the time, seeing those uncle and auntie talk shit all the time, you'd felt like slapping them and getting them to shut up.

As with the dealers dealing the card games, how would u feel if the customers decide to blow their cigarette smoke your way?

If you had unintentionally blown smoke their way you know they are saying good riddance to you. I am curious what is "talking shit all the time"? If I venture a guess, it would be gamblers' tendencies to brag in hindsight or blaming every thing for their losses.

Gambler's Gossips | Black Magic Accusation

Genting constantly comes under fire for using dark arts on gamblers so that they will lose money. The amazing part is you can never use a formula that is outdated. Some preventive anecdote against the spirits may work for that moment but not in future. Here is a very popular spiritual counter measure from 2006 to 2007.

I’ve gamble at Genting Highland for very long time and my total as of last month was in excess of rm10k. I started from rm200. I have a friend who used rm1000 and he had earned more than rm300k in a few months. I have a few tricks for those who wants to gamble up there.

This is how it works,
  1. Bring some candies (mentos, halls, anything will do, as long as they are sweet). After the guard house at Genting Highland (at the hill) there are many ghosts there who will dig into your pocket and take/eat all your money. If you have sweets, they prefer to consume them. Once they ate their fill, they will be happy and bless you with good luck. This is my own experience. One day I forgot to bring candies. After passing the guard house I felt a severe headache. I took that as a bad omen. Once in the casino I lost rm500. I stop playing and went home.
  2. Never wear red to the casino. Although Chinese regard red as a lucky color but in Genting it symbolize blood and that is very inauspicious. Wear white or black (dark colors are acceptable) as a mark of respect to the ghosts up there.
It is okay if you are skeptical but it worked for me.

These are hearsay from senior gamblers and I decided to follow them. I try to learn from the experts and I am still improving myself. At the end of the day it still falls back to luck.

There were many people using these method during that time. It was common to see people pull over to make offerings. Towards the end of this fad, the offering were more generous than just sweets and candies. In closing I quote Robert Ripley's famous punch line, "believe it or not". It is entirely up to you.

Gambler's Gossips|Everything Gets Blame

This comment was brought up to show that gamblers will put the blame on any thing they can think of. The paragraph below summed up the most common complains among gamblers when experiencing losses. All it takes is for others to agree and it becomes an acceptable blame. In due time it will be a superstition.

Always maintain the fighting spirit.There are always influence in the game to divert you but stay focus. Eg (over limit for the table which require discarding away of the excess, quarreling among players, throwing card, pantang (taboo) stuff, waiting that caused impatience, changing money in the table to add on to distraction, scare inside your heart and scare to lose, frustration of half payment with B6 game, tie game, accidentally had your shoes stepped on, no mood because loss a lot earlier, no longer have fighting spirit, change dealer and supervisor between interval, dealer taking out chips from table like trying to kill time, etc), going to toilet, a lot of prediction from gamblers which can mess up yours, etc. All this makes you lose focus and concentration. These technique/rules clouds your bet selection.

This is the right idea. Distraction tactics will made its way the the list of gambling fallacies if we allow it. Instead of trying to deal with these distraction, we are usually caught up with blaming our wrong bet selection on anything that had caused the distraction. The list will be never ending. Pushing the blame makes us feel better and that is the reason it is a natural reaction. By not accepting our mistakes, we will not learn from it.

There is always a devil in the inner self and that controls you. Most people are scare after losing a lot but insist on playing to fight back. Their accuracy judgment have drop a lot due to some resistant in them. Eg, a capital rm10k was used to gamble. After losing rm7k your fighting spirit is gone. In order to win back, you have to play big since you will not likely win every round and this increases the risk. In most cases you will win a hand but lose several hands. If this keeps happening you will be wiped out. You may even take more money out if you chase losses.

On your next trip you bring another rm10k capital and loss again. With greater overall loss the scare feeling becomes stronger. You are indifferent. You want to play but scare of losing again but if you want to win back previous losses you need to play. These conflicts are very dangerous in gambling.

Since the subsequent paragraphs looks at the mental battle in a gambler's mind when facing losses, it is just worth some mention. The account of fear daunting the gambler is detailed out clearly. Fighting a losing battle is mentally exhausting and it is enough to keep screwing up your judgment. Constantly thinking about previous loss drive you to chase it. This will eventually tip you over to irresponsible gambling habits.

Gambler's Gossips | Change Dealer Fallacy

Gamblers are the most superstitious group and dealers usually get the blame. Here is an example that blends superstition with the dealer.

Rule Number #2~
They would change the "He Guan" to neutralized your luck once they noticed you keep winning.
Therefore, you need to change table once the "He Guan" is changed, if and only if you luck is gone~
Post#58 on Aug 5 2008, 02:54 PM at lowyat forum

On a psychological level, a change in dealer causes distraction. Whenever a new dealer comes takes over the table, I used to stop betting and start analyzing. There should be no reason for me to do that because the dealer could not do magic to change the card sequence in the shoe. I must admit that I too had been influence by this change dealer fallacy.

Putting “if and only if” in bold is so hilarious. It is bad enough that the forum member had contradicted herself. Highlighting it makes it even more noticeable for others. If it is not relevant then there is no need to change. You will change ONLY if it has caused changes to you. Therefore it indicates that this change of “he guan” may or may not have any effect on you.

genting will not change dealer.... each dealer has his/her schedule resting period ....

4 tables with 5 dealers, 1 will go rest for 20 mins and other will continue work, the sequence is like that, for example..
00:00 - "A,B,C,D,E" 5 dealers start work. E will take over A, and A will go rest.
00:20 - Dealer-A came back and take over Dealer-B.
00:40 - Dealer-B came back and take over Dealer-C.
01:00 - Dealer-C came back and take over Dealer-D.
01:20 - Dealer-D came back and take over Dealer-E.
01:40 - Dealer-E came back and take over Dealer-A.
... the cycle goes on...
there is no such thing as when you win genting will change dealer....
im a ex-roulette dealer

Mr A starts work at 00:20 and takes a break at 01:40. That is 80 minutes work followed by a 20 minutes break. If people had been observing instead of gambling this rotation is obvious. Table management is the dealer’s primary job function. That involves looking around for potential bettors so that everyone gets to lay their bets before dealing commences, dealing is done in accordance to the rules and regulation of the game, and handling cash.

Assume a situation where mistakes of overpaying bets occurs after each deal since there are so many payout to be made. The loss of money for the casino would be huge. Giving a break for short work duration revitalize the dealers. This would enable dealers to put up their best concentration for 80 minutes to minimize mistakes. It is like changing drivers in long distance travel.

The replenishment, counting and recounting of chips periodically would likely be done base on a schedule so that all is accounted for and that each table is well equip at all times. These again are more built in distraction tactics which causes gamblers to fashion up more allegories. Gamblers should learn to deal with these distraction instead of creating myths out of it.

Funny Bone | Gambler's Regrets

Gambler’s Regrets is the theme song for GGC’s sub group the Quit Gambling Club (QGC). Gambler's Regrets is pathetic and humorous. It's translation is the combine efforts of members. The first two lines of the lyrics could not be translated literary. The idea behind the verses we explained instead.

歌詞/Lyrics.
拎霖(呀)六、長衫六、高腳七,(呀)仲有一隻大頭六;
This speaks of a the bad hands in paigow where you will
end up with the least point. No matter how you arrange it
you will get at best 2 or 3 points. The highest is 9.

二三更,瓜老襯(啦),輸到我木
With 2 or 3 points losses will be certain. Frequently getting
these hands will make you lose until your heart is hardened.

日夜賭場嚟(呀)侍候,生意唔(呀)撈,我兩頭游(呀);
Day and night I would be loitering in the casino.
I lost the motivation to improve my business

我嘅錢輸(呀)晒,真係冇修;
After losing all my money, I am hard pressed.

食更青, 頂肚癮,搵菜頭;
I took only light snack in order to channel everything
to wager hoping to make a fast buck.

劃積(cheque)又怕,彈返轉(呀)頭;
I thought of issuing a cheque but it will bounced anyway.

(呢)問(呀)人哋借(呀),佢又擰吓擰吓頭;
I tried to borrow some money but people and even loan sharks
would avoid me.

籌碼 部,佢又詐嬲,拈出碼頭,把本收;
The pawn shops are disgusted with me but I need to convert
all I have in gaming chips for a bankroll.

爛手錶都當晒,冚塴唥,冇謀;祖先不開眼,令我(就)好擔憂;
I pawned off everything including my worthless watch
Praying to my ancestor did not help and it worries me.

我從前(呀)知道係咁醜(啦),我都唔使踎街 頭...
If only I knew gambling would lead to this disgrace I would had tried
to avoid it and today I wouldn't have to live off the streets.

Gambler's Regrets was a popular hit in 1969. Perhaps is was influenced by the hit "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals in 1964. The hard economic times of that era lead many people to turn to gambling to relief their financial burden. Gambling only brought more problems to these people.
