Commentary | Cruelty for the Sake of Gambling

Women behind bars.

People could be leaving their kids locked in the car for hours and would not come under heavy criticism. Once it is done for the sake of gambling, the term "landu" (compulsive gamblers) will most definitely be attached to them. One unlucky woman locked her daughter in the car and went to the casino and was being charged for leaving a confined and unattended child under the age of 8, neglect of a minor and child abuse.

Chinese believe that if you are landu enough to neglect your children, you have the tendency to convert them into gambling chips and wage them on the gambling table. This "revelation" or "prophetic curse" goes back to the time when children could be sold off as slaves because they had witnessed enough of children with such ill fate during the era.
